Your Baby Clothing Guide
Good to Know Before Buying Baby Clothes
> What features must you look for in a baby clothing item?
Baby clothes with certain attributes make a significant difference in terms of a baby’s ability to sleep, play, relax and grow happily. To this end, you should always prioritise safety and comfort. On top of that, look for designs that enable ease of dress. Not only will this save you time, it will also avoid annoying your little loved one at any time of the day or night.
> How do we insure safety in our baby clothing?
The most important thing to consider when shopping for baby clothes are how safe they will prove to be for your little precious ones. Clothing designs that include potential chocking hazards require a great deal of attention. At Teddley, we go for simple yet smart designs. Meanwhile, our clothes feature robust seams and extra-safe machine pressed snap buttons.
> How do we promote comfort while avoiding irritation?
The material out of which baby clothing is made of is of the utmost importance in terms of ensuring a balanced body temperature. This is especially true for preemies and newborns as they are unable to regulate their own body temperature. Fabrics made out of a 100% organic cotton fibres offer the best breathability qualities. By presenting both hypoallergenic and hygienic qualities, this material is equally considered a perfect fit against skin rashes and allergies. It actually works by naturally inhibiting the growth of bacteria without the need for it to undergo any kind of harsh chemical treatment whatsoever. It’s soft and natural qualities care for a baby’s smooth and easily irritable skin. Avoiding discomfort at all costs also means being over-selective with the quality of the manufacturing. Our clothes present smooth edges and seems. They include a layer of fabric between any plastic or metal blend that may get in touch with your baby’s extra sensitive skin. Finally, while trying to avoid clothes that are too loose, opt for ones that will allow room for your baby to grow. Our pure organic cotton fabrics are tested to ensure that our clothes offer plenty of room for stretch. This means a snugly fit even as your baby grows rapidly into them.
> How do we ensure ease of dress and ease of wash?
Our smart designs are meant to make both your little one’s and your life way easier! Baby clothes that present soft and stretchable neck openings, front zip, side buttons or snap ups are definitely the easiest ones to put on and to come off. As you will need to change them frequently, favour clothes that are machine washable, including tumble dry. Ours are!
> Why should you opt for quality over quantity?
Babies, especially preemie and new born tend to outgrow their outfits in a matter of a couple of weeks. This means that you should opt for small quantities of baby clothes from different sizes. However, never compromise on the quality of the outfit as those support the growth of your precious little one during what is the most critical time for his or her growth. Baby clothes, especially at early ages need to be sturdy enough to be able to sustain many washing cycles while not loosing their softness and stretch. Meanwhile, good clothes are cost worthy as you will be able to pass them on!
Clothing Guide & Sizing
> How to know what baby clothes to buy?
Knowing what baby clothes, how many per size you really need and which ones are only a nice extra can be difficult. Remember that as babies outgrow their outfits fast, you should only stock on a few items in preemie and new-born sizes. Instead, focus on our 3 to 6 and 6 to 9 months’ sizes.
> How should you dress your new baby?
A useful rule of thumb is to dress a baby in layers. These can easily be put on or removed, should the temperature change. In general, remember that at any time, a baby should wear an extra layer to what we grown ups are comfortable in. Depending on the temperature, you will need to cover your precious one with up to four layers of clothing. Never risk them getting too cold or too hot! You will have to choose between whether to wear them a vest, an all-in-one or both. In winter, stock up around 8 pieces of each, opt for long-sleeved suits and avoid socks which will keep falling. In summer opt for short-sleeved suits instead. On top of that and in times of cold, think about buying one or two cardigans and eventually a coat. Again, depending on the cold, wearing them an extra soft cotton jersey and pull-on hats is a good idea.
> How to choose the right size?
We have developed an easy age based clothing size to ensure the best fit and comfort for your baby. In order to make a more informed decision on which size to go with, simply refer to our body measurements table available on our size-guide page.
Organic Vs. Non-Organic Baby Clothes
> Why is organic cotton important in baby clothing?
Within the first few months of a baby’s life, his or her skin must learn to adapt from the womb’s sterile environment to the harshness of the outside world. Products being in direct contact with your baby’s skin must ease this transition by supporting your baby’s sensitive immune system. Baby clothes made out of certified organic cotton fibres are therefore particularly suitable as they hold both hypoallergenic and hygienic properties. They are grown using sustainable farming practices which replenish soil fertility and doesn’t make use of any toxic pesticides and fertilisers. The natural properties of cotton fibres are also not broken down by harsh chemical and pesticides which gives way softer and more durable fabrics.
> Which organic baby clothes are the best?
Not every organic baby garment is made equal! Beyond the choice of PH friendly, unprocessed fibres, the manufacturing stages of a baby garment must also be completely natural. As your baby’s skin is highly porous, thinner than ours and thus much more absorbent, this is the only way how to avoid any form of chemical residues passing through your baby’s skin. We insure that during the spun, knit and dying processes, our products are free from any forms of irritants and toxic chemical residues. This includes heavy metals, formaldehyde, solvents, resin, chloro-organic carriers and biologically active finishes. We use only water based natural dyes that are organic compatible and are proven to have the lowest environmental impact. We take pride to know that baby essentials from our production are the safest and purest and will defend your baby against environmental toxins.
> How durable is organic cotton?
Because our cotton has not been broken down with harsh chemicals, our clothing will last much longer and always wash incredibly well. We take it a step further by picking only the highest quality, extra soft natural fibres that we test for both their breathability and durability.
> How do you wash and care for organic baby clothes?
Caring for fabrics made out of all organic cotton couldn’t be easier. For best results, we do recommend that you machine wash them at 30°C (to keep the fabric’s softness) and that you tumble dry on low or line dry them. Use environmentally friendly cleaning agents and do not use fabric softeners or bleach. This will keep the garment as pure and organic as possible. Using chlorine bleach will not only weaken the cotton fibres’ but may also fade the fabric’s natural colour. Instead, go for mild detergents that are not full of abrasive chemicals which are damaging to your baby’s health.
> What about shrinkage?
Conventional cotton is treated with chemicals to reduce the shrinkage effects of heat; organic cotton isn’t. Our fabrics are thoroughly tested for shrinkage and we would be very disappointed to find more than 4% overall shrinkage. In order to compensate for this estimate, our clothes are cut slightly on the larger size. Our lovely clothes also come pre-shrunk. They are washed using hypoallergenic, unscented detergent. Accordingly, you shouldn’t worry about shrinkage and go for the right size with peace of mind! However, please keep in mind that we do not recommend overheating our all natural fabrics. By drying with high heat, shrinkage may still increase.
> Will the colours fade?
Eco-friendly dyes are just as long lasting as the harmful dyes used on conventional products. However, as conventional dyes do, they will fade if powerful detergents or bleaching agents are used. Because we do not use chemical colour fixatives and due to dye bleed, please do not mix dark colours with light ones for the first few washes. When washing prints, be sure to turn them inside out during the first few washes. This will help lock in the colour for years! For the first wash, you may want to add ¼ cup of vinegar to the final rinse. This will help to set the colour and resist fading.
